Pictures of Scotland
Photographs I have taken myself, with a wee bit about each place. Nothing stock, nothing borrowed, just what I see when I am out and about.
I took this one from the top of the cliff on Kinnoull Hill, looking east along the Tay as it winds through the Carse of Gowrie. That wee tower on the edge is a folly, and it is a pretend castle. The 9th Earl of Kinnoull went off on the grand tour of Europe, liked the castles strung along the Rhine, came home and decided he wanted one of his own, so he built it on the hill above Perth in the 1700s. The road running along the foot of the cliff below it is the A90.
This is the top of the Applecross Pass. Bealach na Bà it is called, the pass of the cattle, and I stopped at the viewpoint on the way over. That is the Inner Sound below, with the Isle of Raasay sitting in the middle of it and the Isle of Skye away behind. The road was built in 1822 for the drovers taking cattle over to Applecross, and it climbs from sea level to about six hundred metres in roughly four miles. Single track, hairpins, and bits of it near one in five. One of the steepest roads in the country, and not one to hurry.
